Our Purpose:

  • To improve mathematics instruction and teacher education programs
  • To provide information regarding mathematics education
  • To cooperate with other organizations for the improvement of mathematics education.

There is a story about the Maasai tribe in Kenya that says they traditionally greet each other with “Kasserian Ingera.” It means, “how are the children?” They do not ask each other, “How are you? Or “How’s your day? But rather, they ask about the next generation.

The story continues that the greeting is used to acknowledge the importance the Maasai place on the well-being of their children, believing that it reflects the future health and prosperity of their society. The traditional response is “Sepati Ingera,” which means “The children are well”. This response can mean that peace and safety prevail, that the priorities of protecting the young are in place, and that life is good. Even warriors without children of their own will respond with this answer, showing that the Maasai society has not forgotten its reason for being.

As educators, may we always remember our true purpose.
